Short term:
2030 agenda

The European Council gathering that took place in October 2014 agreed on the EU's framework for the climate and energy action plan until 2030, and an ambitious economy-wide GHG emissions reduction target was set.

mariposa
  • Reduce GHG emissions by at least 40% by 2030 in comparison to 1990.
  • Raise the share of renewables in final energy consumption above 27%, subsequently increased to 32%.
  • Improve energy efficiency by at least 27%, subsequently increased to 32.5%.
  • Take urgent action to achieve a minimum target of 10% of electricity interconnections by 2020 and 15% by 2030.

The European Commission presented a set of legislative proposals, known as the Fit for 55 Package, aimed at reviewing and updating EU legislation and launching new initiatives in order to ensure that EU policies were in line with this new -55% target.

Fossil energies currently account for 82% of the world's energy mix. However, the response to the climate crisis requires a move towards carbon neutral systems.

By 2030, it would be desirable to not only ensure the sustainability of food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production but also to contribute to the maintenance of ecosystems, strengthen resilience to climate change, extreme weather events, droughts, floods, and other disasters, and progressively improve soil and land quality.

In this graph, we can see that the proportion of agricultural land in which organic agriculture is currently practiced is only 9.66%.

In Spain, the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 (PNIEC) presents a roadmap for the next decade, designed to be consistent with emissions neutrality in 2050. The measures envisaged in the PNIEC make it possible to remove one out of every three tons of CO2 equivalent between now and 2030.

In relation to the targets set in the EU, the PNIEC specifies for Spain:

  • 23% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in comparison to 1990.
  • 42% of renewable energies as a percentage of total final energy consumption.
  • 39.5% improvement in energy efficiency.
  • 74% of renewable energies in electricity generation.
